How to Prepare Skin Before Honey Waxing
For a more controlled wax, start with intact skin, hair long enough to grip and a surface free from oil, lotion and sweat. Review retinoid use, patch test the product and temperature, and postpone waxing if the area is sunburned or irritated.
The day-before checklist
Check hair length
AAD guidance suggests roughly ¼ to ¾ inch. If hair is longer, careful trimming may make application easier. If it is too short, let it grow rather than repeatedly waxing the same area.
Inspect the skin
Do not wax over cuts, inflamed follicles, bruises, peeling, active rash, sunburn or recent aggressive exfoliation. Waxing removes hair and also applies mechanical force to the skin surface.
Review medicines and actives
Retinoids can make skin more vulnerable to injury during facial waxing. AAD advises avoiding facial waxing while using retinoid creams and for two to five days after stopping them; people taking isotretinoin should avoid waxing and wait six months after stopping. Follow your prescriber's advice if it differs.
Should you exfoliate before waxing?
Do not perform aggressive exfoliation immediately before waxing. Scrubs, peels and strong acids can leave the surface more reactive. If gentle exfoliation is already part of your routine, separate it from waxing and never use it on irritated skin.
On waxing day
- Wash the area gently to remove sweat and product residue.
- Dry completely with a clean towel.
- Do not apply body oil or rich lotion before wax.
- Arrange strips and tools before heating anything.
- Tie back hair and protect clothing and surfaces.
- Work in a well-lit area where you can hold skin taut.
Patch test both formula and heat
A formula patch test checks how your skin responds to the product. A wrist temperature test checks whether warmed wax is comfortable. They answer different questions, and neither should be skipped just because you have waxed before.
Never use a numerical temperature copied from a generic article unless it is supplied for your exact heater and formula. The safe texture is warm and spreadable—not painfully hot.
Prepare for aftercare before you begin
Have loose clothing ready and avoid scheduling waxing immediately before heavy exercise, hot baths or high-friction activity. Freshly waxed skin may feel temporarily sensitive.

Frequently asked questions
Should skin be moisturised before waxing?
Keep it comfortable in the days before, but do not leave oil or lotion on the surface immediately before waxing.
Can I wax after tanning or sun exposure?
Do not wax sunburned skin. Wait until the skin is fully recovered.
Should I shower before waxing?
Clean skin helps, but avoid beginning while the area is still hot or damp. Pat dry and allow it to cool.
Can I use numbing cream?
Do not add numbing products unless a qualified clinician has recommended them for you; they can change sensation and mask excessive heat.
What if I use prescription acne medicine?
Ask your prescriber or dermatologist before waxing, especially on the face.
