How to Wear and Dispose of Sanitary Pads Correctly

Table of Contents

Place a sanitary pad sticky-side down in the centre of clean, dry underwear, fold the wings underneath, and adjust until the absorbent centre aligns with your body. Change it regularly, wrap the used pad in its cover or paper, place it in a waste bin and never flush it.

How to put on a pad with wings

    1. Wash and dry your hands.
    2. Remove the pad from its wrapper and save the wrapper for disposal if practical.
    3. Peel off the long adhesive backing.
    4. Press the pad lengthwise into the underwear gusset, with any wider end positioned according to the pack design.
    5. Remove the wing backings, fold each wing around the underside and press firmly.
    6. Pull the underwear on and check that the pad feels centred rather than folded.

If the pad rubs or bunches, it may be too wide or long for that underwear style. Better alignment usually beats repeated adjusting once you are dressed.

How to tell which end goes at the back

Many overnight or XXL pads have a wider or longer back. Product diagrams may identify the orientation. If both ends look similar, place the pad so the main absorbent section aligns with where your flow lands, then adjust after checking your usual leak pattern.

    When to change it

Change around every four to six hours as a general guide, sooner when full, wet, shifted or uncomfortable. Flow can change from one day to the next, so carry spares.

How to remove a used pad cleanly

Wash your hands, lower the underwear and peel the wings away gently. Roll the pad inward so the used surface is contained. Wrap it in the new pad's wrapper, its individual disposal cover or toilet paper.

Namyaa Ultra Thin XXL Sanitary Pads currently include a disposable cover for each pad, which makes wrapping more straightforward outside home.

Put it in a bin—never the toilet

Disposable pads do not break down like toilet paper. Flushing can block pipes and pushes a waste problem into the sanitation system. Use the designated sanitary-waste bin where available. If there is no bin, place the wrapped pad in a leak-resistant opaque pouch until you can dispose of it properly.

Do not leave an unwrapped pad on the floor or open bin. Wrapping contains the contents and keeps waste handling more dignified for everyone.

    What about burning sanitary pads?

Waste systems differ by city and facility. Do not burn pads in an open household fire; mixed materials can create smoke and unsafe exposure. Use an authorised sanitary-waste or municipal system and follow local rules. Facilities using incinerators should operate equipment designed and managed for that purpose.

    Washing during a pad change

There is no need to douche or wash inside the vagina. If you want to clean, rinse the external vulvar area with water and pat dry. Scented wipes, deodorant sprays and antiseptic products can irritate sensitive skin.

Wash hands before and after handling a pad. Hand sanitiser is useful for hands when soap and water are unavailable, but do not apply it to the vulva.

    Common placement problems

    The pad slides backwards

Use clean, dry underwear and press the adhesive firmly. A close-fitting cotton gusset often holds adhesive better than slippery or very loose fabric.

    The wings come loose

Make sure no fabric softener or body oil is on the gusset. Fold the wings without wrinkles and press them together underneath.

    Side leaks happen

Check whether the pad is centred and whether the wing width matches the underwear. If the pad is saturated, change sooner or choose a more suitable absorbency.

    Front or back leaks happen

Move the pad slightly towards the leak area or select more coverage. Sleeping position can change where coverage is needed.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can sanitary pads be flushed?

No. Wrap the pad and put it in an appropriate bin.

Can I use the same pad wrapper for disposal?

Yes, if it remains clean enough to handle. An individual disposal cover or paper also works.

Why does my pad keep folding?

The size may not match the underwear gusset, the adhesive may not have bonded, or the underwear may be too loose.

Should I wash every time I change a pad?

It is not always necessary. Keep the external area comfortable, avoid internal washing and use clean hands. Over-washing can irritate skin.
